Why Nitrox Became My Signature—and Why It Might Change Your Diving, Too

Why do so many divers at Dive Cypria choose Nitrox over regular air?
Because it helps you dive longer, feel fresher, and build habits that make you a safer, more confident diver from the start.

If you’re curious whether Nitrox is worth the switch, here’s my story—and why this one decision became a signature part of how we dive.

🌟 Quick Benefits of Diving Nitrox

  • ✅ Longer bottom times—More time exploring what you love
  • ✅ Shorter surface intervals—Get back in the water faster
  • ✅ Reduced post-dive fatigue—Feel better after long dive days
  • ✅ Perfect for multi-dive trips—Stay energized and safe

From Air to Nitrox: My Personal Journey

Like many divers who started in the early 2000s, I began my underwater life breathing only air.

I was the diver who sat on the boat before every dive, calculating bottom times and decompression limits with my RDP tables. Nitrox sounded like an unnecessary complication. It just didn’t feel relevant back then.

I kept diving, became a professional, and bought my first set of gear—and still, all I ever considered was air. You don’t know what you don’t know.

I dove air-only in Egypt, then Crete, and finally Cyprus. Even though I had taken the Enriched Air Nitrox course long before, it never really clicked to actually use it. I accepted the persistent, sometimes severe post-dive headaches and the deep fatigue that hit after long diving days as part of the sport. Because I’d never tried Nitrox, I simply couldn’t put two and two together.

A Turning Point After the Pandemic

When the pandemic forced the world to pause, I decided it was time to rethink how I wanted to dive—and how I wanted to teach.

Returning to full-time diving, I made a promise to myself: if I was going to build a dive center, I would do it to the highest standards I could imagine.

I retrained myself in all the dive theory I had learned years before, this time through the eyes of a professional responsible for other people’s safety. It was humbling to realize how much had evolved.

When I became a Nitrox instructor, I couldn’t imagine that this specialty would become such a core part of my philosophy. On paper, the benefits were clear. But when I started diving Nitrox regularly, everything shifted:

  • ✅ I no longer crashed after two or three dives a day.
  • ✅ My post-dive headaches disappeared so gradually, I didn’t even notice until one day I had to dive on air again because my guests weren’t certified. That was the first time in years I felt that old exhaustion.

Building Dive Cypria: The Standards I Wished For

When I opened Dive Cypria, I set out to create the kind of dive center I had always hoped to find as both a guest and an employee:

  • ✔️ Clean, welcoming environment
  • ✔️ Well-maintained, hygienic gear
  • ✔️ Small groups and personal attention
  • ✔️ Inclusive sizing—gear that fits every body

Switching to Nitrox for all dives was an easy decision as a diver. From a business perspective, yes—it is a costlier alternative. Nitrox requires special filling equipment, oxygen-cleaned tanks, and extra staff training. But the safety and comfort it provides for my divers has always been worth it.

It’s 2025 now, and for the last three years, we have dived exclusively with Nitrox.

I also decided to integrate Nitrox training into our Open Water courses—not mandatory, but strongly encouraged. From day one, students learn to dive with computers, manage their gas safely, and build habits that last a lifetime.

Other instructors sometimes ask why I don’t just put a simple depth gauge in the console—it’s cheaper, after all. But nothing makes me happier than seeing our divers learning to use their dive computers confidently, doing their safety stops independently, and feeling empowered from their very first certification.
